“Excuse me, sir, where are the batteries?”
A simple question from a client today while out in the community with me—and such a powerful reminder of how far she has come in her recovery journey.
Brain injury rehab isn’t just about regaining physical function—it’s about rebuilding confidence, purpose, and connection. The mental health impact is huge, and often invisible.
That’s why community engagement is non-negotiable. Real life happens in supermarkets, cafés, and on buses—not just in rehab settings.
So while it may have been a simple question to the shop worker, it was a huge achievement for this client—a step up in her independence, communication, and self-esteem.
I was one proud OT to witness it and the client requested a selfie with me so we could remember it! (all permissions have been granted to post the selfie!)
